Mojitos Number 8: Bulls Head Pub
(by Marian Pontz)
Second Friday in Lititz and Bulls Head Public House (pub) leads this writer into an evening of camaraderie, good food, and rule breaking.
A date with my husband of 16 years (on a Friday evening... in a new location) could have gone many ways — too tired for talk, too long a wait for food, too new to be comfortable, too expensive, too pretentious, too, too, too.
Much to our delight there was nothing “too” about Bulls Head Pub. It was perfect. Walking into the bar from Main Street, Lititz you are immediately transported to a quaint English bar that one would visit for a bit of company and a pint after a long day’s work.
I doubted, at that initial point, I would be able to order a mojito, for I would be as out of place as when Clarence, the angel in It’s a Wonderful Life, ordered mulled wine—not the right place, not the right time.
To my surprise, however, our very tall and charming bartender made the mojito. I watched him to see if he would hesitate in its creation, but he muddled with ease and poured the Cuban delicacy into a perfect-sized glass. I sipped. We ordered the mussels and salads and began one of the most relaxing and detoxing journeys into weekend.
The reality is it was not the best mojito I’ve had this summer; but it was good, and the ambiance of the pub, the delicious and fairly priced large size portions of food, and the friendliness of the crowd created a magical visit.
We had the pleasure of chatting with a gentleman from London here for his wife’s family reunion. He cracked us up with stories of his cultural confusion at Hoss’s buffet and with his struggle at not being able to order a pint at Hoss’s. Really, how else was he going to survive if he had to visit with his wife’s people? It was at this point that I broke a well-established drinking rule, and I have no excuse except to say I was having fun; the conversation was flowing; my glass was empty, and I didn’t want to leave. I twisted hubby’s arm, and he ordered another beer. I joined him with another mojito. The crowd got larger and louder. Our London gentlemen had to leave, and our table was being coveted by the larger and hungrier crowd. I would have loved to milk the drink a little longer and to people-watch both on the busy streets and in this fabulous pub, but our sojourn into the world of no trouble, no “have-tos,” and no stress had to end.
I cannot recommend you go into the Bulls Head Pub just for a mojito, but I do recommend it as an accoutrement to an evening of transformative relaxation. In other words, go there and have a good time, and the mojito won’t disappoint.
Three dancing girls for the mojito, and 5 thumbs up for a hell of a good time!
